Feather Lover Farms is pleased to be the first and only hatchery in the US to offer the first Bantam French Black Copper Marans chicks!
For many years, the French Black Copper Marans have been ruling the roost here in the US. Take that breed and miniaturize them and you have a bantam chicken breed that will be desired by most backyard chicken enthusiast.
The large breed Marans chicken has been re-bred to offer a smaller, compact Bantam variety that lays medium sized tan to brown tinted eggs and can lay 150-200 eggs a year. The original large fowl bird was developed in France in the town of Marans in the mid-1800s, the breed was developed originally for both meat and egg production.Since then it has become a favorite pure breed amongst chicken keepers all over the US and can be found in a variety of colors including cuckoo, white splash, French copper black and more.
Bantam Marans are derived from the original French large breed. At Feather Lover Farms we breed the Black Copper variety in the bantam form as it is the most popular Marans color. Though the Bantam variety is not yet accepted by the American Poultry Association here in the US, they are accepted as a breed standard in Europe. Since they are not yet accepted by the APA as a recognized breed, they are still a work in progress as far as improvements on getting darker brown eggs and more constantly hatching chicks with feathered legs. Some of the hens can produce light brown eggs and chicks occasionally hatch clean legged instead of feathered legs. We are doing our best to selectively breed for darker brown eggs and feathered legs to improve these traits.
The Bantam Marans are quite hardy and very easy to care for compared to many other Bantam chicken breeds that many times require much extra care. They are great for the first time chicken keepers, being very friendly and docile.

Straight Run Chicks: Straight Run Chicks are un-sexed, randomly selected and each chick has a 50/50 chance of being a male or female.
Shipping: You will receive an automatic email and text message when your chicks ship along with tracking info. Chicks usually arrive in the morning 1-2 days later and your local Post Office will call you for pickup. Chicks are never delivered to your home address, even if you used a home address for your shipping address.
What I Need: Everything you need can usually be purchased at your local feed store. Chick starter feed, waterer, brooder (cardboard box, plastic storage bin, bathtub, or even a kiddie pool are popular), pine shavings, thermometer and a heat lamp or heat source. Baby chicks require heat of about 95 degrees their first week of life. Second week you can lower the temperature to 90 degrees and so on with every week going down 5 degrees until 6-8 weeks old or when they are ready to go "outside".
How Do My Chicks Survive Shipment?: Baby chicks do not need food or water for the first 72 hours of life. Ingesting their yolk sac gives them the nutrition they need to survive the journey from Feather Lover Farm's hatching facility to you! Shipping day-old chicks helps ensure a safe arrival since they will usually be just 2 days old when you receive them.
