Description:

An exotic chicken breed newly imported into the US, the Schijndelaar chicken originated in the Netherlands and is pronounced "Shine-dull-ar." This extrememly rare chickn breed is one of our favorites to watch free range while they peck at grass in the California sun rays.

The Schijndelaar chicken breed was created in the Netherlands by a veterinarian named Ruud Kaasenbrood, in the late 20th century. His goal was to create a breed that lays a green egg, with a feathered crest, a long body and high egg production. He used the the Arauacana for their blue egg gene which the correct crossing can produce green eggs. The Sumatra chicken breed gave him the long body and beautful sheen. The Dutch crested chickens gave him the crested head. The Brabant chickens or Brabanter chickens were used in the cross but reasons are unknown. Lastly, the Leghorn was used for obvious reasons of their unbelievable high egg production.

After seeing our flock of luxurious Schijndelaar chickens daily roaming at Feather Lover Farms, we must say that the Netherland veterinarian accomplished his goal of creating a crested chicken that lays a blue to light green egg, has a long body & back and has very high egg production. We must also add that this breed is good size, very tame and has a beautful long tail. Their look is similar to the White longtailed Yokohama chicken breed except for the blue and light green eggs and crested head. The Schijndelaar chicken comes in chocolate, blue, black and cuckoo with Feather Lover Farms offering the White color type. The white color Schijndelaar chicken was officially recognized in the Netherlands in 2001.

With their unique looks, blue to light green eggs and unmatched beauty, the White Schijndelaar chicken literally makes you feel that collecting these rare and exotic chickens is not just a hobby, but a beautiful and enjoyable experience every time you step into your backyard chicken coop.

Quick Chick FAQs:

Straight Run Chicks: Straight Run Chicks are un-sexed, randomly selected and each chick has a 50/50 chance of being a male or female.

Shipping: You will receive an automatic email and text message when your chicks ship along with tracking info. Chicks usually arrive in the morning 1-2 days later and your local Post Office will call you for pickup. Chicks are never delivered to your home address, even if you used a home address for your shipping address.

What I Need: Everything you need can usually be purchased at your local feed store. Chick starter feed, waterer, brooder (cardboard box, plastic storage bin, bathtub, or even a kiddie pool are popular), pine shavings, thermometer and a heat lamp or heat source. Baby chicks require heat of about 95 degrees their first week of life. Second week you can lower the temperature to 90 degrees and so on with every week going down 5 degrees until 6-8 weeks old or when they are ready to go "outside".

How Do My Chicks Survive Shipment?: Baby chicks do not need food or water for the first 72 hours of life. Ingesting their yolk sac gives them the nutrition they need to survive the journey from Feather Lover Farm's hatching facility to you! Shipping day-old chicks helps ensure a safe arrival since they will usually be just 2 days old when you receive them. Our packaging is professional with a brand new chick shipping box, nesting material and warm long lasting heat packs depending on the time of the year. Your chicks will look like they just hatched out of a nest when you open the box and jump into your arms, thinking you are their mother hen!
