Description:

This incredibly rare chicken breed was imported into the US in 2011 from Sweden. The Swedish Isbar also called Silverudd Blue, is one of the very few chicken breeds that lay moss green eggs. In fact, they are the only chicken breed on the planet with single combs that lay green eggs. In 2017, Feather Lover Farms acquired multiple unrelated breeding flocks by hand selecting each bird as adults for pristine genetic quality and have since then been building only the finest specimens to use in our breeding program. Our breeding pens consist of both he 1st and 2nd Swedish Isbar imports for genetic diversity.

Isbar, pronounced "Ice-Bar", is a new breed that was created in the 1950's by a priest named Martin Silverudd. Father Silverudd, obsessed with the genetics of chickens, developed a number of different chicken breeds, including the 55 Flowery Hen, the Molilja, the Queen Sylvia and the Isbar. His goal in creating new auto-sexing chicken breeds that laid an abundant amount of unique colored eggs. He is very well respected in chicken genetic circles and his protocols are still being used today in universities and breeding programs.

Feather Lover Farms flocks of Isbar are some of the last Isbar genetics that were imported from Sweden. There are a few varieties of Isbar including a deep blue, birchen and splash blue color. With the Isbar having blue genetics, this makes auto-sexing in chicks almost impossible and we can only offer them as unsexed day-old chicks. If you are seeking only sexed chicks that will lay colored eggs, you may want to look into our Cream Legbar Chicks. Though, if you breed your own Isbar from us, you may be able to acquire the feel for the feather color tendencies in male and female chicks.

There were 2 different imports of Isbar in the US. One in 2011 and one is 2013 to help bring in healthy genetic diversity. Feather Lover Farms received hand selected high-quality flocks from both imports and are all in multiple unrelated breeding pens. With both of our imported bloodlines, they should allow you to breed your own from the chicks you receive from us for many healthy generations. Our fertility and hatch rates are unbelievably good for being such a rare breed and the hens are egg laying machines.

Isbars are cold-hardy chickens and thrive when foraging free range but can also be confined without issue. The hens can produce up to 200 green eggs a year and occasionally are known to produce speckled brown eggs, though we breed for the green egg laying capability. Isbar chickens are alert with potential predators but are calm and docile with people as ours will eat out of our hands. Whether you are seeking Isbar for being an incredibly rare breed or it's moss green eggs, the beautiful Isbar will add glamour to anyone's flock.

Shipping: You will receive an automatic email and text message when your chicks ship along with tracking info. Chicks usually arrive in the morning 1-2 days later and your local Post Office will call you for pickup. Chicks are never delivered to your home address, even if you used a home address for your shipping address.

What I Need: Everything you need can usually be purchased at your local feed store. Chick starter feed, waterer, brooder (cardboard box, plastic storage bin, bathtub, or even a kiddie pool are popular), pine shavings, thermometer and a heat lamp or heat source. Baby chicks require heat of about 95 degrees their first week of life. Second week you can lower the temperature to 90 degrees and so on with every week going down 5 degrees until 6-8 weeks old or when they are ready to go "outside".

How Do My Chicks Survive Shipment?: Baby chicks do not need food or water for the first 72 hours of life. Ingesting their yolk sac gives them the nutrition they need to survive the journey from Feather Lover Farm's hatching facility to you! Shipping day-old chicks helps ensure a safe arrival since they will usually be just 2 days old when you receive them. Our packaging is professional with a brand new chick shipping box, nesting material and warm long lasting heat packs depending on the time of the year. Your chicks will look like they just hatched out of a nest when you open the box and jump into your arms, thinking you are their mother hen!
