New Quail Breed For 2023!

Description:

Mearns Quail, also known as Montezuma Quail, are one of the rarest wild quail in the world, one of the most beautiful and can make great pets!

Feather Lover Farms is pleased to announce we have acquired many imported and unrelated breeding stock of Mearns quail over the years and are finally ready to offer pairs for sale starting Fall 2023!

The Mearns Quail can be found in the deserts and mountains of northern Mexico, south and central Arizona, New Mexico, and West Texas. Unlike most wild quail that stay in colonies, Mearns quail stay paired off the entire year besides in the fall when they raise their offspring. The females are a beautful light brown while males have a very striking color pattern with a white and black face and white dots across their chest and back resembling a cape. Both male and female have a bit of a crest of feathering on their head. Though these quail tend to be quiet, they can make about 6-9 different beautiful singing notes or calls which is a pleasure for us to listen to when we are near their breeding pens at our farm.

Breeding season is from May through August and each female can be expected to lay roughly 40-60 eggs per season. Incubation time for this breed takes 25 days. In the wild, the male helps incubate the eggs as well as the female.

At Feather Lover Farms, our Mearns quail are quite tame due to not only raising them all from babies, but we often feed our Mearns quail crumbled dried mealworm treats when we collect their eggs. It is recommended to feed them a higher protein diet than the average quail species. 20-30% protein is ideal.

These quail can be so surprisingly tame, it is known to see some people with pet Mearns quail sitting on their lap or shoulder in their house! Many of our Mearns quail on our farm will eat mealworms right from our hands.

Some neat facts about the Mearns quail: Mearns Quail are known by many other names including Montezuma, Harlequin (which is confusing because there is a separate species called African Harlequin), Desert, Black, and Censorial, Fools, and Painted, among others. Mearns quail are also hunted in Arizona and are considered a rare prized bird.

Being one of the rarest quail species on the planet as well as one of the most beautiful, Feather Lover Farms is excited to start shipping Mearns quail pairs out starting Fall 2023! Pairs will be hatched from eggs laid spring and summer and will be full plumage and fully feathered. Order your Mearns Quail pairs today and help prevent these rare quail from going into extinction!
